About Emotional Rating Scale
Participants were asked to rate emotions toward the targets presented in the vignettes using a Likert-type scale of 1 (not at all) to 7 (extremely). The emotional rating scale was modeled on one used in a previous study that examined negative affect towards gay men (see Glick, Gangl, Gibb, Klumpner, & Weinberg, 2007). The scale contained 17 emotions, including positive responses (e.g., comfort, admiration), negative responses related to fear (e.g., insecurity, fearful), and negative responses related to hostility (e.g., anger, disgust). The discomfort scale included seven positive emotions, which were then reverse-scored to create the scale to be congruent with the other two scales. Cronbach’s alpha for these scales ranged from .72 to .87 in a previous study (Glick et al., 2007).
