About Adult Measure of Behavioural Inhibition

The adult measure consisted initially of 23 items, including several relating directly to behaviours in unfamiliar social situations and several more general items including reactions to non-social stimuli. Items measuring aspects of sociability were also included, as well as items measuring behaviours related to novelty and risk avoidance. Most items were designed to capture those indices of behavioural inhibition to the unfamiliar observed in children (Garcia-Coll et al., 1984), which could be adapted to adult behavioural responses in adult situations. They included the following: quietness, hypervigilance, freezing, non-approach, nervousness, physiological anxiety, staying close to a familiar base, observing unfamiliar people from a safe distance, reluctance to initiate social contact and social withdrawal.
