About The Flow Questionnaire

The Flow Questionnaire (Csikszentmihalyi, 1975b, 1982; see also Han, 1988) is a set of three quotations, taken from the original interviews with flow experiencers, that describe the chief characteristics of flow. The participants were asked to indicate via a yes/no answer whether they had ever experienced something similar to the event these three quotes illustrated and if they had, to write a brief description of that event (1-2 sentences). Then, as in Fave and Massimini (1988), participants answered a set of 12 questions about the flow experience they recalled, using a 5-point, Likert-type scale. The questions described various aspects of the proposed flow model (e.g., “I feel I can handle the demands of the situation.”). Certain items were reverse-scored (e.g., “I get anxious.”) in order to minimize response bias. The Flow Questionnaire and the 12 dimensions of flow are included in Appendix F.
