Symptoms are based on a 5-point Likert scale reflecting the prior month’s epoch. Increasing scores reflect increasing symptom severity. The Brief Symptom Inventory has been used in hundreds of published studies and has demonstrated good reliability and convergent validity (see Derogatis & Melisaratos, 1983). We focused on the Depression subscale score for the purpose of this study.
