About Beck Hopelessness Scale Urdu
To measure negative attitudes or hopelessness, the Beck Hopelessness Scale (Beck et al., 1974) was translated and adapted into Urdu. The Beck Hopelessness Scale is a self-administered scale that is designed to measure hopelessness in populations of ages 17 and over. It has been validated for clinical as well as nonclinical samples (Durham, 1982; Steed, 2001). It is a dichotomous 20-item scale with 11 true-keyed items and 9 false-keyed items.
Beck et al. (1974) have reported a reliability coefficient of .93 with a reasonable concurrent and construct validity determined by comparing the BHS scores with other hopelessness measures and hypotheses testing. The total Urdu-Beck Hopelessness Scale score was calculated by adding up the scores of all the items after recoding the falsekeyed items in the direction of the hopelessness measure and dividing by the number of items.
