About Youth Risk Behavior Survey
YRBS (Youth Risk Behavior Survey). For the purpose of this study, a shortened version of the YRBS was used as a measure of risky behavior. Specifically, lifetime engagement in smoking cigarettes, alcohol consumption, and marijuana use, were examined. For each behavior, participants were asked to specify if they have ever participated in the risky behavior, how old they were when they first engaged in that behavior, and the frequency in which they participated in the risky behavior within the past month (i.e. 30 days).
The YRBS has been found to be a reliable measure, with 71.7% of the items rated as having substantial or higher reliability (kappa = 61%-100%) (Stevens & Griffin, 2001). Data from a test-retest reliability study indicated that students report risk behaviors reliably over time on this measure (Brenner, Collins, Kann, Warren, & Williams, 1995; Stevens & Griffin, 2001).
