The Global and Local Burden of Chronic Pain
Chronic pain is a leading cause of reduced quality of life and disability worldwide. In the United States alone, it carries an annual cost of approximately 600 billion dollars. Musculoskeletal conditions, including low back pain, neck pain, and osteoarthritis, account for roughly 80% of all chronic pain cases.
In Pakistan, the burden is similarly alarmingly high. Systematic studies comparing risk factors globally found that disability rates in Pakistan increased by 63% among women between 1990 and 2010, largely due to musculoskeletal disorders. Despite this, there is a growing unmet need for chronic pain management in the country.
