The Family Context of Childhood Delinquency by Justin W. Patchin: For decades social scientists have attempted to identify and understand the etiology of juvenile crime and to determine factors that contribute to the persistence or desistance of antisocial behaviors. A better understanding of such factors would allow policymakers and practitioners to develop and implement effective interventions to ameliorate the antecedent conditions of aggressive and delinquent behavior. One such factor that has been identified as playing a pivotal role in the development or cessation of deviant tendencies is the relationship between child and parent.
Concomitant with this interest in the relationship between family functioning and crime in recent years has been a concern that interventions aimed at rehabilitating delinquent youth have largely failed (Gottfredson & Hirschi, 1990; Whitehead & Lab, 1989). Particularly obstinate are serious and violent offenders who seem impervious to any effort at intervention.
