Mental Health Tips For Elementary Students

Here are some mental health tips for elementary students. Kids these days, like to play games online, go on social networking sites, and chat with friends. All of this is fine and dandy – parents who have access to quality kids’ programming can’t help but notice. But the downside is that the entertainment a child gets from playing computer games or internet games often depletes their attention span. They may spend hours playing these games, day in and day out. Many kids don’t realize how detrimental boredom and loneliness can be to their mental health.

It’s also important for elementary students to get plenty of exercise and sleep. The lack of both can really affect a young child’s mental health. Exercise has been proven to lift our moods and energy levels, so it makes sense that it would benefit kids, too. And most kids do enjoy exercise. Here are some mental health tips for elementary students to maximize the time they spend outside of the classroom learning math, reading, and writing.

Limit social media use – While it’s fun and easy to stay glued to Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter for hours on end, mental health tips for elementary students would advise you to limit social media use. Too much social media can cause unhealthy ways of thinking and can interfere with family communication. The more time your child spends communicating through these social networks, the less time they’ll have to connect with friends and family in person. So, talk to your child about social networking, but make sure they know it’s a bad thing.

Limit screen time – Whether your kid watches TV, plays video games, or sits in front of a laptop all day long, screen time is damaging. Excessive screen time has been associated with low self-esteem and anxiety, so it’s important to talk to your child about this. If they want to play video games, talk to them about the benefits and the risks. And remember, mental health tips for elementary students are designed to help, not hinder.

Join a student club – Most schools offer clubs for different interests, from art to sports. Being part of a student club can be a great way for your child to meet others who have similar interests. Some of these clubs even offer mental health tips for elementary students. So, look into the clubs your child might be interested in and see if they might offer advice on how to deal with school stress.

Seek professional help – Many schools have counselors and mental health experts on hand. If you feel like you’re overwhelmed or you just don’t know where to turn, talk to the school counselor or psychologist at school. They can provide guidance on how to handle stress from school. And, speaking of dealing with school stress, many mental health tips for elementary students include finding a good teacher.

Educate yourself – Another of the mental health tips for elementary students is to educate yourself. Because mental health is linked to other areas, such as physical health and nutrition, it’s important to get educated about what’s going on. Learn what your child is up against and learn how to counteract that stress with healthy practices such as yoga and meditation.

Talk to your child about stress – One of the best tips for mental health for elementary students is to talk to your child. This doesn’t mean simply about homework but instead to discuss any issues you may be having. It’s important to express your concerns, no matter how small they seem. The more you can express your fears and worries, the less stress and anxiety you can expect to feel. Talking with a friend may also help to reduce stress and anxiety.
