About High Status Job Index

The high-status job index asked participants to rate on a Likert-type scale (1 = no interest; 7 = strongly interested) their interest in high status (e.g. doctor, corporate lawyer) jobs and low status (e.g. teacher, artist) jobs. The High-Status Job Index (HSJI) was created such that high scores equalled strong interest in high-status jobs (α = .51). Participants were also asked to estimate the number of years of education post-high school they believed they would attain, as well as the amount of money (in thousands of dollars) they would make in their career. Years of education, money and the HSJI were all positively correlated, all rs(228) > .18, ps <.01.
