I’d like to use this opportunity to remind you that laziness is what your vacation was supposed to be a break from. Who knows, maybe you don’t even need to accomplish anything useful while on vacation. Maybe you’re simply lousy at cooling down because you have so little practise.

Keep to the Fundamentals

If our physiological demands aren’t met, relaxation is next to impossible. When we’re hungry or tired, we become irritable and tense. However, these things might be the first to go when you’re trying to go schedule-less, leaving you feeling disoriented.
I recommend starting with the essentials to build a sturdy platform upon which to rest and recharge. Keep up with your regular routine of three square meals, eight hours of sleep, and regular cleanliness practises. These are your only need for survival.

Just let your feelings out for a while.

Overworked and under pressure, you may have been stuffing your feelings to get through the day. During peak periods, this is a normal but temporary measure to take. But when we rely on work to stifle our emotions too much, we start to worry that we can’t control our sentiments on our own.
Thus, after you quit working, your feelings may come back to haunt you. You’re too busy to feel anything, so you’re always stretching that rubber band that represents your emotional state. Whenever you take your hand off of it, such as when you leave on vacation, it snaps back with a vengeance upon your return.
My advice is to not worry too much if you experience emotional disarray during the first few days of your trip. Avoid the temptation to bury your emotions by overloading yourself with extra tasks. Feelings of grief, worry, and rage are normal and will pass.

Exercising Your Free Time

Practicing relaxation is similar to practising anything else. Don’t assume that your initial incompetence predestines you to a lifetime of failure. Gaining skill requires actual practise. Try sleeping in a little later than normal, or just vegging out on the sofa with a good movie. Feelings of guilt are normal; remind yourself that you’re doing nothing wrong. Do not disturb your sleep!
Try not to utilise this time to better yourself. To become better would be against the rules. To live, you must rest. You are a living being, and like all living things, you have a need for sleep. Take the time to read something completely trivial. Do something as physically easy as taking a stroll. For the time being, try letting yourself exist without trying to do anything in particular.

Pick Your Activities Carefully

Of course, there may be times when you want or need to accomplish anything during your downtime. Ask yourself, “Is it essential for me to accomplish this thing?” to determine whether these pursuits are appropriate for you. If not, you may always choose to not vote.
Consider, second, whether or not you think you would like participating in the proposed activity. Don’t inquire whether or not “Is this activity meant to be entertaining in general?” Forget about the question “Do I want to be the sort of person that performs this activity?” If you’re not absolutely required to accomplish anything, today’s activities should at least seem interesting to you. If not, I recommend sleeping in or going out for a nice meal.
