About Encyclopedia of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders by Evelyn B. Kelly
Encyclopedia of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders by Evelyn B. Kelly: ADHD is not just a fad that has been created in the latter half of the 20th century. It is documented in history. In 493 B.C. Hippocrates, the great physician on the Greek island of Cos, described a condition in patients who had quick sensory experience and their souls moved quickly on to the next impression. Believing that an imbalance of the four humors — water, fire, earth, and air—causes all diseases, Hippocrates attributed this condition to an overbalance of fire over water.
He recommended a diet of barley rather than wheat bread and fish rather than meat; he also recommended adding water drinks and natural and diverse physical activities. Even Shakespeare referred to a serious malady of attention in King Henry VIII. In 1845 a German, Dr. Heinrich Hoffman, wrote an illustrated book of children’s poetry that described a boy named Fidgety Phillip, who obviously had all the symptoms of ADHD and who met a tragic end when he pulled all the food on the table over on top of him.
Dr. Hoffman attributed the problem to bad behavior and certainly never considered it could be inherited from parents. ADHD was first observed clinically in 1902. Sir George F. Still described a group of impulsive children who had behavioral problems. He added the idea that the problems of these children could be traced to a genetic disorder and not poor parenting. Still called the condition a ‘‘morbid defect of moral control.’’ Others studied the condition and found the condition to be one that had identifiable symptoms.
