About Oppositional Defiant Disorder Rating Scale
We assessed the level of child oppositional behaviour by mother or withfather report using the ODDRS (see Note). We selected a parent report format because children have been shown to be less reliable as reporters of their own symptomatology (Achenbach et al., 1987). The ODDRS contains the eight ODD symptoms taken word for word from the DSM-IV-TR (see Table 1).
Parents are asked to rate the extent to which each symptom is descriptive of their child over the past 6 months on a 4-point rating scale (0 = not at all, 1 = just a little, 2 = pretty much, 3 = very much). We based this format on the ADHD-IV Rating Scale–4, which is commonly used to assess DSM criteria for ADHD and has been shown to have good psychometric properties. We calculated total scores on the ODDRS by summing the 4-point ratings on all eight items.
In a previous study with 43 mothers of boys with ADHD (not included in the current data set), the ODDRS had an internal consistency of .81 (Johnston et al., 2004). These are the only previous psychometric data reported for this measure. If participating children were taking a stimulant medication (n = 170), we asked the parents to rate the child’s behaviour when he or she was not medicated. Parents did not report any difficulty with this procedure because most of the children were taking short-acting medications and were not medicated in the evenings or on weekends, holidays, or school breaks.
