n.1. in linguistics, phonetic features of an individual’s speech that are associated with geographical region or social class. The standard version of a language (see standard language) is usually considered by native speakers to be unaccented. Compare dialect.
2. a stress placed on a syllable of a word, orthographically marked in some languages.
