Citanew is the brand name of Escitalopram. Doses are available in 5mg,10mg & 20mg.
Escitalopram (Citanew) for:
Citanew is used for the following Disorders.
- Major Depressive Disorders
- OCD
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder
- Insomnia
Major Depressive Disorders
For Maintenance and treatment of the major depressive disorder, 10mg citanew is given orally per day. The dose may increase to 20mg per day after one week.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
10mg orally per day of citanew is given for the treatment of GAD. Treatment starts with the lowest dose and note that extended treatment is required or not.
OCD
For OCD 10 mg orally per day. After 1 week the dose may increase to 20mg per day. Treatment starts with the lowest dose and note that extended treatment is required or not.
Insomnia
5-20 mg orally is given for an 8-week duration for insomnia associated with depression. It is also used for insomnia related to panic disorder in women. 5-10 mg orally given for 8-week duration.

- Menstrual disorder
- Flatulence
- Toothache
- Yawning
- Weight gain
Psychiatric disorders:
● Delusion
● Paranoia
● Feeling unreal
● Suicidal tendencies
● Restlessness
● Completed suicide
● Mania and hypomania
● Nightmare
● Hallucination (visual and auditory)
● Depression aggravated
● Delirium
● Acute psychosis
● Suicide attempt
● Anger
● Depersonalization
● Mood swings
● Nervousness
● Confusion
● Panic reaction
● Agitation
● Apathy
● Self-harm or thoughts of self-harm
● Disorientation
● Suicidal ideation
● Anxiety
After prescribing citanew carefully monitor patients of all ages for any alarming conditions such as suicide or unusual behavioral changes. Immediately discontinue treatment.
Pregnancy
This medication should only be used when necessary during pregnancy. It may affect unborn babies. Babies may develop withdrawal symptoms such as muscle stiffness, constant crying, feeding and breathing difficulty, and seizures whose mothers were using citanew. If you notice any of these symptoms in your newborn immediately contact your doctor. Before breastfeeding, consult your doctor because citanew passes into breast milk and may have the worst effects on your newborn baby.
Drug Interaction
There is a high risk of drug interactions when Citanew coadministered with another drug such as:
● Alcohol
● CNS Drug
● Metoprolol
● Cimetidine
● Desipramine
● Ketoconazole
● Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors
Precautions of Escitalopram (Citanew)
- Citanew should be carefully administered to the patient with a history of seizures.
- Do not prescribe to children under 18 years.
