Abstract of the thesis

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between resident assistant (RA) job performance and emotional intelligence when assessed by the Widener Emotional Learning Scale (WELS), which was created by faculty at Widener University specifically to address the emotional intelligence of undergraduate students. This study was inspired by two previous studies (Wu, 2008 and Jaeger & Caison, 2006) that examined the relationship between RA job performance and emotional intelligence when assessed by the Bar-On EQ-i.

Emotional Intelligence as a Predictor of Resident Assistant Job Performance

This study was conducted at West Chester University, a large public university in Pennsylvania. The study used ex post facto RA job performance evaluations from the fall 2013 and spring 2014 semesters, which had been completed by the supervising resident directors, in addition to the RAs emotional intelligence scores.

The findings of the study indicate that there is no relationship between emotional intelligence when assessed by the WELS and RA job performance. A weak positive correlation was found between the WELS subscale of Self-Management and RA job performance. In addition, there were no differences between the emotional intelligence between first-year RAs and returning RAs. And a regression analysis revealed that the best predictor of RA job performance is GPA.
