About Abuse Within Intimate Relationships Scale
This study was designed to develop a measure of intimate partner abuse for adolescents and young adults to fill an important gap in the literature. Items were generated and completed by students at a large, open-enrollment university who are largely representative of most late adolescents and young adults. Therefore, findings should be generalizable to a similar population, with the possible exception of ethnic minorities and individuals who do not attend college.
Further research is necessary to confirm the factor structure of the AIRS with these groups. Results indicated that a second-order factor model (physical and psychological) with five first-order subfactors (Overt Violence, Restrictive Violence, Emotional Abuse, Deception Behaviors, Verbal Abuse) was confirmed with excellent fit indices. In addition, this structure makes theoretical sense because emotional and verbal abuse along with deception can all be considered different facets of psychological abuse. However, combining these concepts may not accurately represent the true nature of the problem. It may also lead to false negatives in the identification of abuse if all these concepts do not apply in a particular situation. Although all models tested showed excellent fit, the second-order model is the most theoretically defensible
