Preconventional Level

The first level of Kohlberg’s moral development taxonomy where individuals’ ethical principles are guided by the consequences of the action and the benefit awarded to him or herself. At this level of development, a child may not take a piece of candy from another because he or she is afraid of being punished opposed to being guided by feelings of morality or an understanding of the law.
