About The Marital Attitudes Scale

The efforts of Hinson, Robertson, Franks, Northrup, and Pak (2004) were the first to develop a briefer instrument and to apply the instrument in relational therapy with various models for couples therapy including CBT, Bowenian multigenerational, strategic therapy, and solution-focused therapy.
Utilizing a cognitive-behavioral theoretical orientation, the original 100 items of the initial version of the MAS were randomly selected and assigned to four subscales (cognition, affect, behavior, and schema), with 12 items per scale along with a total score of the sum of the 48 items (Hinson et al., 2004). The same 4-point Likert scale was used. A research sample (n = 46 clinical couples; n = 32 nonclinical couples) was generated from clinics affiliated with two COAMFTE-accredited marriage and family therapy training programs and their local communities.
The authors reported an internal alpha of .96, differences between clinical means (95.5) and nonclinical means (57.7) for the total MAS score, and correlations of .89 for the total MAS and the total MSI score, and for subscales with each other (.81–.90). The authors suggested that discriminant, construct, and face validity was established.
