Background/Description

An modified version of the NIDA-Modified ASSIST is included in the DSM-5 Level 2—Substance Use—Adult. The fifteen-item questionnaire is used for the purpose of evaluating the pure domain of prescription drugs and the usage of illegal substances among people aged 18 and older. Before beginning a session with the therapist, the person is responsible for completing it. A competent informant may be able to complete the measure in the event that the person receiving care is unable to complete the form due to a lack of ability (for example, if the individual is suffering from dementia). In each question, the person getting treatment (or the informant) is asked to assess the severity of the individual’s use of a variety of drugs over the course of the previous two weeks.

Administration, Scoring and Interpretation

A scale of five points is used to score each component of the measure. The scale ranges from 0 (not at all) to 1 (one or two days), 2 (many days), 3 (more than half the days), and 4 (almost every day of the week). During the clinical interview, the clinician is tasked for reviewing the scores of each item on the measure and indicating the raw score for each item in the part that is designated for “Clinician Use.” Because each question inquires about the utilisation of a different substance, the scores on the separate items need to be interpreted in a manner that is independent of one another. A higher severity and complexity of drug use is indicated by the assessment of numerous items with scores that are more than zero by the individual.
