Abstract of the Article

The purpose of the present study was to develop a measure to assess Personal Responsibility. An initial 100-item measure informed by relevant literature, related scales, and focus group data (from 20 Year 11 students and 10 high school teachers from two public high schools) was administered to 513 students in Years 9-12. Exploratory factor analysis highlighted two main factors.

Within these factors, item-total correlations were examined and items that did not contribute significantly were deleted. Confirmatory factor analyses were calculated with an additional sample of 124 Year 11 students, which further refined the scale. The CFA for factor 1 retained 17 items and was labeled ‘self control of emotion and thoughts’.
The CFA for factor 2 retained 13 items and was labeled ‘self control of behaviour’. This process resulted in a 30-item Personal Responsibility Questionnaire which exhibited satisfactory reliability. Suggestions for further validation of the measure are made.
