Background/Description

The DISC model is a popular tool for understanding different behavioral styles and preferences. Developed by psychologist William Moulton Marston in the 1920s, it classifies individuals based on two key dimensions:

  1. Focus: Task-oriented vs. People-oriented
    This dimension identifies whether someone is primarily driven by accomplishing tasks and achieving results, or by building relationships and influencing others.
  2. Pace: Direct and fast-paced vs. Indirect and patient
    This dimension reflects whether someone tends to be decisive and assertive, or more cooperative and deliberate.

By combining these two dimensions, the DISC model creates four distinct behavioral styles:

  • Dominant (D): Direct, decisive, results-oriented, and forceful.
  • Influential (I): Open, enthusiastic, persuasive, and relationship-focused.
  • Steadfast (S): Cooperative, patient, reliable, and unassuming.
  • Conscientious (C): Analytical, precise, detail-oriented, and rule-abiding.

Each style has its own strengths and weaknesses, and understanding your primary style can help you:
