About Abdominal Pain Beliefs Questionnaire by Van Slyke
The Pain Beliefs Questionnaire (PBQ), a 32-item self-report measure of the pain beliefs of children and adolescents with chronic pain, assesses cognitive appraisals that may influence children’s coping strategies, disability, mood, and pain severity. The PBQ is grounded in the stress, appraisal and coping framework advanced by Lazarus and Folkman. According to this framework, the extent to which a situation is experienced as stressful and associated with adverse consequences can be modulated by one’s appraisal of the level of personal threat presented by the situation (i.e., primary appraisals) and one’s ability to cope with the situation (i.e., secondary appraisals).
