Background/Description

The participants’ psychological well-being was evaluated using this scale. It is made up of 42 different items that are equally distributed among six different dimensions, which are as follows: self-acceptance, purpose in work and life, personal growth, positive relations with others, environmental mastery, and autonomy.

Scoring

It is important to note that there is neither a specific score nor a specific cutpoint that defines high or low well-being. These distinctions can be derived most accurately from the distributional information contained in the data that was gathered. For instance, high well-being could be defined as scores that are in the top 25% (quartile) of the distribution, whereas low well-being could be defined as scores that are in the bottom 25% (quartile) of the distribution. This applies to both the short and long versions of the scales.

Another alternative would be to define high well-being as scores that are 1.5 standard deviations above the mean, whereas low well-being is scores that are 1.5 standard deviations below the mean. The response range of each item is from 1 (strongly disagree) to 6 (strongly agree).
Reverse coding: Item no. 3, 5, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 23, 26, 27, 30, 31, 32, 34, 36, 39 and 41 are reverse coded items.

Reliability and Validity

The internal consistency for a total score of psychological well-being was found to be ( =.85), and its subscales of self-acceptance ( =.73), purpose in work/life ( =.65), personal growth ( =.76), positive relations with others ( =.74), environmental mastery ( =.68), and autonomy ( =.70) were each found to have their own respective values for internal consistency.
